När Stockholms kyrkogårdsnämnd 1914 utlyste en internationell arkitekttävling om ordnandet av Stockholms nya södra begravningsplats, gjorde man det med förhoppningen att området skulle få såväl estetiska som praktiska kvaliteter. En alldeles särskild tonvikt lades på de redan existerande terrängförhållandena och växtligheten. Inbjudan till tävlingen hörsammades av många, och Då hade man länge haft planer på en utvidgning av Åmots första kyrkogård vid Kapellet (Bunges).
